Employee Background Checks Made Necessary

Employee background checks are found to be needed more and more today than any other time in history. They could protect the lives and families of other employees, as well as the company hiring.

The necessity for these background checks became obvious after the September 11 event in America. An employer could no long be negligent in the hiring of new people in their company, as it may actually endanger the lives of the other innocent and respected employees of the company. In addition to current events, resume fraud is becoming more frequent with the desperation of landing a job. Further, with child abuse and abductions also on the rise, sex offenders living among us, and other factors, depending on what type of position an employee tries out for, a thorough background check may be necessary.

Whether for a new hire or the promotion of an existing employee, these background checks are for the safety and security of the company hiring, as well as for the other employees that already work there. They can be required by the State or Federal law, depending on the position and company. Records they can ask for are medical, criminal, credit, educations, state licensing, driving, and bankruptcy. It may also include interviews from neighbors, personal references, as well as character references. You could be asked about past employers and workers comp claims. They will check sex offender lists, as well.

The information that they cannot check into is a bankruptcy over ten years old, credit, liens on taxes, and other collection accounts that are over seven years old. Criminal convictions, however, will still be checked into.

But these rules apply only with jobs offering under seventy five thousand dollars per year.

Negligent hiring is no longer an option in the world today. An employer must make every effort to know who they are hiring, therefore employee background checks becomes increasingly necessary.
